A Shropshire Lad

14-06-11

In the normal quiet backwater of Shropshire there is a sudden flurry of news.

First we had Sir Elton John in concert: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-shropshire-13749699 and very good he was too.

Meanwhile just down the road in Wellington there are concerns about some local Asian men sexually exploiting young girls, some under 16 years in age: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-shropshire-13766736 That will not go down well in a predominantly white rural Shropshire community if the allegations are proved to be true. There could be ‘trouble at mill’ in otherwise largely very polite Salop.

The local Shropshire County Council are proposing a 5.4% pay cut, a reduction in holidays and sick entitlement: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-shropshire-13765258 And they sound serious about these proposals. This does seem to be a rather unique approach by a council – we will watch with interest.
